MEZQUITA DEL CRISTO DE LA LUZ - Temple History

Descripción

We are facing the oldest monument still standing in the city of Toledo, a fact we know thanks to the brick inscription that we can see on the building's facade. This text tells us the following: "In the name of Allah, Ahmad ibn Hadidi had this mosque built from his own funds, seeking Allah's reward in the afterlife. It was completed with Allah's help, under the direction of Musà ibn Alí, the architect, and Sa'ada, being finished in Muharram of the year three hundred ninety." For us, it is the year 999, the peak of the Umayyad Caliphate, when it was decided to build this oratory next to the Bab al-Mardum Gate, where the faithful would come to pray before embarking on or returning from a journey. The temple welcomed followers of Muhammad until the 12th century, when it was taken by the Knights of the Order of Saint John and became the Hermitage of the Holy Cross following the city's conquest by Christian troops. It was at this time that the Mudejar apse was added as the presbytery of the new church.
