JESUIT CHURCH - The Society of Jesus

Descripción

The Order of the Jesuits This religious order settled in the imperial city in the year 1558, when Archbishop Carranza granted them permission to establish a house and a school that moved to different locations until finally, and thanks to the significant donations made by the Manrique brothers, a strong boost could be given to the construction of this impressive religious temple. These promoters, Don Pedro and Doña Estefanía Manrique, rest above the doors of the side chapels next to the main altar where today, we can still see their coats of arms on the pendentives. Unfortunately, two years after the completion of the building, the order was expelled from Spain and America, and the church began to function as the parish of San Juan; furthermore, during the religious confiscations of the 19th century, most of the assets of the Society passed into the hands of the State. In the year 1903, the Jesuits returned to occupy the temple until 2011 when it became part of the Sanctuary of the Sacred Hearts.
