STARTING POINT - ZOCODOVER SQUARE - History of the Square

Descripción

In Roman times, this space already had its importance, delimiting the defensive area around the pretorio, but it will be with the arrival of the Muslims when it will take on the function of a market that has practically reached our days. They called it suq al dawabb -zoco of beasts- because it was the place where they traded with pack animals. We know that they accessed the enclosure through the Bab al Yayl or gate of the horses, now known as the "Arco de la Sangre", refuge of the chapel of this Christ in the Middle Ages, but the truth is that it was not until the reign of Henry IV that the privilege of establishing a weekly market in the area definitively was granted. In the 16th century, the famous architect of King Philip II, Juan de Herrera, designed the structure of the arcaded square similar to those built in other cities such as Madrid or Valladolid, but little has come down to us from this first project as it has suffered numerous fires and renovations throughout history, with the one that occurred during the Civil War being the most devastating of all time. The historic Zocodover was reduced to ashes after the bombings that aimed to destroy the nearby Alcázar.
