THE MOSQUE OF CRISTO DE LA LUZ - Legend

Descripción

One of the most beautiful legends of Toledo takes place in this mosque and provides us with information about the current name of the temple. Surely you have wondered, why Cristo de la Luz? To understand it, we have to go back to the times of King Alfonso VI, famous for reconquering the city from the Muslims around the year 1085. When this brave monarch was crossing the walls of the imperial city, his horse stopped at the feet of this oratory without any way to continue. The king's entourage inspected this area to see if they could find something that would offer them answers to this strange behavior of the animal, and they found the image of a Christ accompanied by two lit candles that had been hidden by the first Christians of the city before the imminent Muslim invasion. The king supposed that the Lord was sending them a sign to transform the Muslim oratory into the church of Cristo de la Luz. Even today, we can still see the white stone located in front of the temple where the horse stood, reminding us of this fantastic story.
