STARTING POINT - ZOCODOVER SQUARE - Uses of the Square

Descripción

In this square, there have been representations of Autos de Fe, bullfights, proclamations of edicts, and it has witnessed two macabre medieval inventions: the pillory and the clavicote. The pillory was a kind of hook that was hung on a corner and displayed body parts of executed criminals as a lesson for all the neighbors. The clavicote, on the other hand, was a large cage located in the center that exhibited deceased individuals without family next to a donation box so that the townspeople could show compassion and help cover their burial expenses. If we want to live in the Zocodover of centuries ago, we just have to immerse ourselves in the pages of universal masterpieces like Lazarillo de Tormes or Don Quixote where they tell us how this place of rogues and villains was. Many writers have imagined stories in this square: Bécquer, Zorrilla, Galdós, Baroja... making this place one of the most portrayed in our literature.
