JESUIT CHURCH - Construction of the temple

Descripción

The current church was built in the year 1619 following the model of the Church of the Gesù in Rome and other Spanish Jesuit temples. The design of the building was the work of the famous architect Juan Bautista Monegro, although it was Father Pedro Sánchez who supervised the entire construction process. Subsequently, other important master builders such as Francisco Bautista, Bartolomé Zúmbigo, and José Hernández Sierra would complete the work. In this case, and contrary to what was usual in the past, construction began at the feet of the temple because the house of San Ildefonso was still preserved at the head. Finally, the Church of the Jesuits was inaugurated in the year 1718, although it was not completed until 1765, just two years before the expulsion of the Society of Jesus from Spain, by order of Charles III.
