Today, we can learn about the history of San Ildefonso through the countless images of the saint and his miracle that flood the city of Toledo, but it is here, right where we are, where it all began, as we have before our eyes the birthplace of this popular saint. Tradition tells us that it was exactly on this site where Ildefonso came into this world and where he spent the first years of his life in the early 7th century. The patron saint of Toledo is known for the “Miracle of the Chasuble”, a story that tells of the Virgin's gratitude and the subsequent gift of a chasuble to Ildefonso for believing in her virginity, an event that took place in the now disappeared Main Church of Toledo, a temple that occupied the space of the current Cathedral and still preserves the pillar where the apparition occurred. The saint's house was used as a small oratory until the 16th century, when the Society of Jesus decided to acquire the land with the aim of building a grand temple in his honor.
