ROYAL COLLEGE OF NOBLE MAIDENS - Cardinal Siliceo and his mausoleum

Descripción

The figure of Cardinal Silíceo, founder of the college, is present throughout the building. On one hand, we can see his coat of arms with the monogram of Jesus, IHS, on the main facade of the college, and on the other hand, we have a large portrait of him inside the church, in addition to the spectacular tomb created by the famous sculptor Ricardo Bellver in the year 1890 where his remains rest. From the Cardinal's death in 1557 until the 19th century, his body lay in a simple wooden box covered with a black cloth and a mitre on top, but in the current catafalque we can see this great personality dressed in his liturgical vestments in a praying attitude, with vegetal ornaments and the four theological virtues in the corners, a complete iconography befitting the represented figure.
