CHURCH OF THE SAVIOR - History of the building

Descripción

The first oratory that was built on this site was a mosque constructed in the 9th century, of which some vestiges remain such as the minaret that now forms the base of the bell tower and part of a courtyard with horseshoe arches. It is uncertain whether there was a previous temple on this site, but numerous Roman and Visigothic remains have been unearthed and can still be seen inside. In the 12th century, during the reign of Alfonso VII, the mosque was transformed into a church, but over the centuries, the oratory suffered countless fires, looting, and confiscations until it was finally closed in 1842. Today, this important monument serves as the headquarters of some religious brotherhoods from which the most famous processional floats depart during Holy Week.
