Legend has it that in the year 1145, Queen Doña Berenguela of Barcelona, wife of the famous King Alfonso VII of Castile, had to take refuge in the city's main mosque, now Church of El Salvador, during a strong storm. The queen, very frightened by the force of the rains and winds brought by the storm, did not stop praying to her God for the situation to cease. Within a few minutes, when the storm disappeared, Berenguela promised her God that she would transform this Muslim temple into a beautiful Catholic church. In this way, the oratory ceased to house the followers of Mohammed to shelter the people of Toledo. Fantasy or reality, the truth is that in the year 1893 an inscription was found in the Chapel of Santa Catalina confirming the fact that the temple functioned as a mosque before becoming a church.
