IGLESIA DE SANTO TOMÉ - History of the building

Descripción

We are facing a building that has its origins in an ancient mosque that was built in the 11th century, a fact that we can verify by observing some remains that have come to us from that construction period, such as the brick tower, ancient minaret of Muslim origin that also features ornamental elements from the Visigothic period, and its decorations made of glazed ceramics, horseshoe arches and polylobed blind arches. A century later, the oratory was transformed into a church and in the 14th century, a restoration of the temple was necessary due to its ruinous state, a work carried out under the patronage of the Lord of Orgaz. Today, there are barely any remains of the original church as it was modified in the following centuries, but we can still see a large polylobed arch in the presbytery nave and another of smaller dimensions at the top of the apse.
