CHURCH OF SANTO TOMÉ - El Greco in Toledo

Descripción

We refer to Doménikos Theotok&243;poulos as El Greco, "the Greek," due to the fact that he was born on the Greek island of Crete in the year 1541. This artist had a great artistic training thanks to his long stays to train in Greece, Italy, and Spain, circumstances that would determine his peculiar pictorial style. The reason he came to our country was to work on the recent works of the Monastery of El Escorial, sponsored by King Philip II, but after a series of disagreements with the monarch, the artist ended up leaving the Imperial Court for the city of Toledo. Today we know he arrived in the year 1577 with the aim of creating a large altarpiece for the Convent of Santo Domingo el Antiguo and that nine years later, in the year 1586 when he was already a recognized painter, he was commissioned the large canvas for this church of Santo Tomé. Thanks to the preserved documentation, we know that the painting was completed in the year 1588 and that he received the sum of 1200 maravedíes, a high amount for his time.
