SANTO TOMÉ CHURCH - The Burial of the Count of Orgaz

Descripción

We face the most famous painting by the Cretan painter that describes the legendary moment when San Agustín, represented with the mitre on the right side, and the young San Esteban, on the left side, are burying the Lord of Orgaz who is dressed in a Castilian armor. El Greco separated the two worlds into two heights and with two different pictorial styles, in the lower area or earthly zone real characters of his time are arranged following Flemish currents of representation and using a very dark color palette to contrast with the upper part or heavenly zone shining with colors in the Italian manner, where the saints and saved are located. In the central part we see how an angel pushes the soul of the deceased to be welcomed by María, San Juan Bautista, and Cristo, and on both sides, we find characters who already inhabit the heavens where the figure of San Pedro stands out with the keys that will open the doors of paradise. This work has some curiosities such as the representation of the artist's son, Jorge Manuel, pointing to the deceased with a moralizing sense, on the other hand, we can see the date of his birth on the handkerchief hanging from the pocket, and also, we have the figure of the king among the group of saved, the martyrdom of San Esteban in the lower left part, and the appearance of a possible self-portrait of the painter as an assistant to the burial; we refer to the only character looking at the viewer.
