SINAGOGA DE SANTA MARÍA LA BLANCA - La Judería de Toledo

When we talk about the Jewish Quarter of Toledo, we are referring to the space occupied by this community in the western part of the city from the earliest moments we have record of their presence in the city, 4th century AD, until their definitive expulsion in the year 1492. We know that coexistence with Christians and Muslims went through periods of greater acceptance and others of lesser, but, in any case, around the year 820 they already had a wall separating their neighborhood from the rest of the city's inhabitants. This peaceful coexistence gradually ceased to exist until between the late 14th and early 15th centuries, when they were prohibited from accessing public offices and began to lose their privileges completely. In the case of this synagogue built in a prosperous period for the community, it seems likely that it was constructed to meet the worship needs of a flourishing and constantly growing community due to the influx of Jews from Al-Andalus after the Almohad invasion.
