SYNAGOGUE OF SANTA MARÍA LA BLANCA - Jewish liturgy

Descripción

When we enter a Sephardic Jewish temple, we must know the spaces and religious objects used in these synagogues in order to better understand their practices and ways of life. First of all, it is necessary to know that we call Sephardic Jews all those who lived in the Crown of Castile and in the Crown of Aragon until their expulsion ordered in the year 1492 by the Catholic Monarchs, and all their descendants. The Sephardim go to the temple to pray five times a day, men occupy the central space and women, generally, the upper galleries. Before entering, Jews dress in two essential garments, the kippah and the tallit, which are a head covering and a mantle, respectively, used as a sign of respect. Once inside the prayer hall, they direct their gaze towards the hekal or sacred wall where openings in the wall hold the Torah scrolls, their sacred scriptures. Finally, we must know their most well-known symbol, the menorah or candelabrum with seven branches, an object that they light one by one each day of the week during their Hanukkah celebration, a symbol that, on the other hand, is found in numerous places in the pavement of the Jewish quarter.
