MONASTERY OF SAN JUAN DE LOS REYES - The Catholic Monarchs

Descripción

We are in front of the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes, a monastery that takes its name from those who sponsored its construction, the Catholic Monarchs. This wonderful building was erected in the year 1477 under the patronage of San Juan, a saint for whom Queen Isabel felt a special devotion and who was very present throughout her life since her father was named Juan, and her children Juan and Juana. For this reason, the eagle, symbol of the Evangelist, is present in numerous areas of the temple. This beautiful Gothic building is immersed in a myriad of meanings and iconographies since, first of all, it was decided to be located in the Toledo Jewish Quarter, near the Puerta del Cambrón, as a demonstration of the power that Christians had acquired over Jews. On the other hand, its construction was considered as an ex-voto to God made by the monarchs after the victory of the Battle of Toro, an event that allowed Isabel's coronation as queen of Castile. In addition, the temple was designed as a Royal Mausoleum since at that time the kings intended to be buried there, something that never happened as they changed their minds a few years later when they conquered the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada and ordered to be buried in the Royal Chapel of said cathedral, a place they still occupy today.
