SAN JUAN DE LOS REYES MONASTERY - History of the building

Descripción

Unfortunately, this monument has gone through historical periods in which it was heavily damaged, such as during the War of Independence, when there was an intentional fire in its premises and some parts were destroyed, like a large Plateresque cloister that was located where the School of Arts stands today, the library, and the altarpiece of the Main Altar, among other losses. Years later, during the disentailments of 1836, the other cloister that could be preserved passed into the hands of the City Council, and the Church to the Archbishopric, reaching the end of the century in an advanced state of ruin. In 1881, the renowned architect Arturo Melida undertook a comprehensive renovation of the building, restoring all damaged areas and adding Neo-Gothic elements such as some freestanding sculptures, the roof cresting, gargoyles, and the wooden coverings of the second floor of the cloister.
