SAN JUAN DE LOS REYES MONASTERY - Exterior Description

Descripción

If we contemplate this magnificent architectural work from the outside, we can appreciate a construction that exceptionally combined the Gothic style and Mudejar style with the first Renaissance influences, thus creating a unique monastery in the history of Spain. Today, its longitudinal structure stands out, crowned by stylized pinnacles, the facade of the church, and the current entrance door. The temple's facade was made later, between 1606 and 1610, by the famous Covarrubias, and in it we can highlight a beautiful conopial arch that houses sculptures of different Franciscan saints and Saint John the Evangelist, in addition to other ornamental motifs such as the coat of arms and the cross, yokes and arrows, or the soldiers with tunic and mantle guarding the entrance of the temple. Probably what has caught our attention the most are the remains of the chains hanging from the top of the wall that belonged to the Christian captives rescued after the capture of Granada and were transferred to Toledo as a symbol of gratitude to the Catholic Monarchs. If we head to the entrance door, we will find a beautiful architectural ensemble carved by Enrique Egas known as "The Pelican Door", which represents the cross at Calvary with the Virgin and Saint John crowned by a pelican symbolizing the Eucharist.
