SAN JUAN DE LOS REYES MONASTERY - The church

Descripción

Once inside the temple, we can contemplate a beautiful oratory formed by a single large nave with side chapels that follows the layout of the preaching churches established a few years earlier by the religious orders of the Franciscans and the Dominicans, where space and light were two fundamental elements that had to be present. On the other hand, we find an altar raised by steps, a large dome at the head in a metaphor of the temple's coronation, a wide space in the center of the presbytery where the sepulchral catafalque would be located, which was never carried out, and a high choir located at the feet of the temple. The entire architectural ensemble follows strict hierarchical precepts, as the area reserved for the crown is separated by a fence from the area dedicated to the people, as well as the preferential place of the Kings when they attended mass from the choir, elevated to the same height as the Holy Form, thus equalizing the earthly power of the crown and the celestial power of God. This church has elaborate ornamentation on its walls that reminds us at all times of the importance of the Catholic Monarchs in this place: royal shields, inscriptions that offer us information about its construction, the symbols of the monarchs - the yoke and the arrows -, sculptures, stained glass windows, etc., highlighting the altarpiece of the Main Altar made by Francisco de Comontes in the 16th century for the Hospital of Santa Cruz, which deals with the themes of Jesus on the way to Calvary, Saint Helena with the miracles of the Cross, and the Descent.
