SAN JUAN DE LOS REYES MONASTERY - The Cloisters

Descripción

To access the lower cloister of the monastery, we must pass through a door framed by a conopial arch where we will find the representation of the Veil of Veronica in the access tympanum. Once inside, we will be amazed by such an astonishing place conceived by the famous architects Juan Guas and Enrique Egas as paradise on Earth. If we walk around the lower cloister, we will encounter a Gothic structure composed of pointed arches with an unparalleled decorative richness: geometric tracery, vegetal and fruit motifs, real and fantastic animals, inscriptions, sculptures representing Franciscan monks, etc., all surrounding the garden divided into four parterres creating a metaphor of the four parts of the world. When we finish touring the lower part, we will access the upper cloister through a beautiful staircase designed by Alonso de Covarrubias and completed by Nicolás de Vergara and Juan Bautista Monegro where we can contemplate wonderful mixtilinear arches in addition to the entire iconographic and ornamental repertoire created by Arturo Melida in the 19th century: sculptures, gargoyles, coffered ceilings, lions, and the famous motto "tanto monta, monta tanto".
