INTRODUCTION Who were the Habsburgs?

Descripción

Traditionally, we have heard how the Habsburg dynasty was divided into the so-called "major" and "minor" branches, a fact that related the first two monarchs, Charles I and Philip II, to the "major" branch for having practically kept the territories they had inherited intact, and the later kings, Philip III, Philip IV, and Charles II, to the "minor" branch for having lost a good part of them and led the empire to bankruptcy. The truth is that throughout these two centuries, the Habsburgs aroused much envy in other European powers, which led to their involvement in numerous wars in order to maintain their hegemony, but inevitably they began to lose due to the scarcity of economic resources and the delegation of royal power to the figure of the royal favorite. It is curious that during this decline, the Spanish Golden Age occurred, in which the best painters, sculptors, and writers of our country emerged. However, if we think about it for a moment, it is always during the most tragic historical circumstances that the brightest minds emerge.
