PLAZA DE PUERTA CERRADA.

Descripción

The Plaza de la Puerta Cerrada takes its name from an ancient gate of the wall that was built in this space during the Middle Ages and was demolished in the year 1569 on the occasion of the triumphant entry into the city of Isabel de Valois, the third wife of King Felipe II. Tradition has it that this access used to remain closed due to the numerous vandals and looters that roamed the area at night and preyed on passersby. Today, some sections of the medieval wall of the town are still preserved integrated into some buildings, and the mural painting with the emblem of the city of Madrid stands out: "I was built upon water, my walls are made of fire," which refers to the numerous underground aquifers on which the city was built and the quality of the stone used to build its defensive walls.
