ARCH OF CUCHILLEROS.

Descripción

At this point we find ourselves at one of the ten entrances to Plaza Mayor, and the most famous of them all for being one of the most picturesque images of Madrid de los Austrias. This entrance was designed in 1790 by Juan de Villanueva, the architect of the Prado Museum, due to a major fire that significantly altered the structure of the square. It took its name from the place where the guild of the Cuchilleros (knife makers) used to gather. This place is full of anecdotes, as it appears, for example, in Galdós' famous novel "Fortunata y Jacinta" as the home of the protagonist, was frequented by the famous bandit Luis Candelas, and was chosen by Friar Antonio to address the population on May 2, 1808, in the face of the imminent invasion of Napoleon Bonaparte's troops.
