THE MONASTERY OF THE BAREFOOT. History.

Descripción

We are facing a convent that has historically been linked to the women of the House of Austria as it was founded by Doña Juana de Austria, sister of Philip II, daughter of Charles V and princess of Portugal who stayed as regent in this place when her brother had to travel to England with the aim of marrying Mary Tudor and later after becoming a widow of the king of Portugal. For its construction, she acquired the properties belonging to Alonso Gutiérrez, treasurer of Charles V, where the Emperor used to stay and where Doña Juana herself was born, and for which she brought seven Clarisse nuns from Gandía. Today, among numerous places full of history and works of art, we can find the sepulchral chapel of the founder occupying the place where she was born.
