Descripción

The famous Ventura Rodríguez was inspired by the Phrygian goddess of the Earth for this square that initially occupied one side of it, it was not until 1895 when it was moved to the center to align the street and make way for carriages. The original ensemble featured a dragon and a bear from which water was collected by water carriers, sculptures that are now located in the Museum of Origins in the famous neighborhood of La Latina. The myth of Cybele is related to that of Hippomenes and Atalanta, which tells how Hippomenes fell madly in love with Atalanta but she did not reciprocate because she had consecrated herself to the goddess Diana and her virginity. Hippomenes asked for help from Aphrodite, the goddess of love, and she advised him to challenge Atalanta to a race because she was a great runner and would accept, but that during the race, he should drop golden apples from the Garden of the Hesperides so that she could not resist picking them up. And so it was, Hippomenes won and won Atalanta's love. One day, overwhelmed by passion, they made love in the temple of Cybele and the goddess considered this act a desecration, so she decided to transform them into lions and condemn them to pull her chariot eternally without being able to look at each other's faces.
