THE CHURCH OF SANTO TOMÉ

Descripción

We are in front of a building that has its origin in an old mosque that was built in the eleventh century, a fact that we can verify when contemplating some remains that have come down to us from that construction period such as the brick tower, an old Muslim minaret that in turn has ornamental elements from the Visigothic period, and the decorations of the same based on glazed ceramics, horseshoe arches and polylobed blind arches. A century later, the oratory was transformed into a church and in the fourteenth century it was necessary to undertake a rehabilitation of the temple due to its dilapidated state, a work carried out under the patronage of the Lord of Orgaz, a character known worldwide for appearing in the masterpiece of universal painting that El Greco dedicated to him in 1588 and which is inside it.
