THE SYNAGOGUE OF SANTA MARÍA LA BLANCA
We are in front of an oratory that was built in 1180 to serve as the Main Synagogue of the Jewish Quarter of Toledo, forming part of the ten temples that were erected in the old Aljama. We know that in the mid-thirteenth century a fire destroyed part of the building and that in 1259 it was rebuilt reusing the existing materials. A century later, the tensions between Jews and Christians were felt in the revolts of 1355 and 1391 and meant the end of the synagogue that became the Hermitage of the Virgen Blanca and after this it continued to function as a beguinage, army barracks and gunpowder depot. It is currently considered one of the medieval wonders of the city thanks to its interior structure formed by a sea of horseshoe arches and its beautiful ornamental motifs of Mudejar tradition such as tile plinths, friezes and plasterwork of lacework or capitals with plant decorations.
