CHURCH OF SANTO TOMÉ

Descripción

We are in front of a building that has its origin in an old mosque built in the eleventh century, a fact that we can verify by observing some remains that have come down to us from that period, such as the brick tower, an old Muslim minaret, which in turn has ornamental elements from the Visigothic period, as well as decorations based on glazed ceramics. horseshoe arches and polylobed blind arches.

A century later, the oratory was transformed into a church, and in the fourteenth century it was necessary to carry out a rehabilitation of the temple due to its dilapidated state, a work carried out under the patronage of the Lord of Orgaz, a character known worldwide for appearing in the masterpiece of universal painting that El Greco dedicated to him in 1588 and which is located inside.
