THE ALCALÁ GATE. Description.

Descripción

We have received the story that King Carlos III liked both projects presented by Francesco de Sabatini so much that he ordered to integrate both into the door, and that is why the two facades are different, each corresponding to a design by the architect. The entrance with the most ornamentation is the one facing the Retiro Park because it was the face that foreigners encountered when entering the city and it had to impress them. In this part, we find Ionic-style columns, an allegory of fame playing the trumpet, and four angels representing the cardinal virtues: temperance, fortitude, prudence, justice, in addition to the inscription "REGE CAROLO III ANNO MDCCLXXVIII". The side facing the city has less ornamentation, pilasters instead of columns, and the angels carry shields.
